Metaphysics was my first interest in philosophy and I pursued graduate studies with questions of ontology in mind. I chose to write my dissertation on a case study in metaphysics: the ontology of moral properties. Acknowledging that doing this properly would demand far more than a passing familiarity with moral philosophy, I did my best to develop an expertise. Only after I began a serious study of morality did it become clear to me that working on its issues has a value in its own right, independent of its value for learning metaphysics. This change in thinking accelerated as I learned more about the moral philosophy of the ancient Greeks. Thus, I now see the progression of my professional interests as an example of how practical rationality can mature: I began studying morality for purely instrumental reasons, but then learned of its intrinsic value and now happily pursue it for its own sake, along with metaphysics.
